The Nexus 7000 supports VDC. VDC allows the partitioning of a single physical device into multiple logical devices.The logical separation provides the following benefits;
- Admin and management separation
- Change and failure domain isolation from other VDC
- Address, VLAN, VRF and vPC isolation
Each VDC appears as a unique device and allows for separate Role-Based Access Control (RBAC).
Each VDC maintains an individual high-availability (HA) policy that defines the action that the system will take when a failure occurs within a VDC.
Some components are shared between VDC(s);
- Single instance of the kernel which supports all of the processes and VDCs
- Supervisor modules
- Fabric modules
- Power supplies
- Fan trays
- System fan trays
- CMP
- CoPP
- Hardware SPAN resources
The curent max is 4 (the default and 3 additional)
Once the VDC is created the physical interfaces need to be assigned to it. Depending on the Ethernet modules you may need to allocate on a per-port basis or per-port group baisis.
Resources can also be allocated to an individual VDC including IPv4 route memory, IPv6 route memory, port-channels, and SPAN sessions.
